Failure analysis

PoliLaPP, in collaboration with SAMM and LAC, performs diagnostic activities and laboratory tests aimed ad defining the causes of corrosion of components in exercise.

The diagnosis activity involves the following phases:

  • evaluation of operating conditions
  • collection of information regarding the history of the corroded element
  • characterization of the corrosive attack: morphology, type, entity
  • definition of the corrosion causes
  • indication of repair and protection systems

Several analyses can be performed on the corroded component, including:

  • chemical analyses (supported by the facilities of the LAC laboratories of Politecnico di Milano)
  • optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, laser profilometry, scanning probe microscopy, and glow discharge spectroscopy GD-OES (supported by the facilities of the SAMM laboratories of Politecnico di Milano)
